If it's a problem, run your drill press at a slower speed and run it into the wood slower. your only other real option is looking into forstner bits, but if you need little holes you're still going to be stuck with brad points. at some point, though, you're at the mercy of how much runout you've got in your drill press.. Hey everyone. i'm new to woodworking, and i chose to build a workbench as my first project. i've been trying to drill pilot holes before putting screws in the legs, but i keep breaking drill bits and i don't know why. i'm using 2x4 whitewood studs, ryobi black oxide drill bits, and just an ordinary drill. any tips to avoid breaking the bits?.
