In this weekend class we will make a mitered box into which the top– with its traditional kumiko “hemp leaf” pattern will sit. mike pekovich is the executive art director at fine woodworking magazine and is an accomplished furniture maker and instructor. his original designs are both inspiring and elegant in their simplicity.. I’m pleased to announce that i’ll be teaching a kumiko class in collaboration with my friend yann giguere of mokuchi woodworking. the class is scheduled for august 26th, and will cover the basics of making kumiko patterns, including a discussion of the various jigs and methods used to make them.. In this kumiko course, the traditional japanese craft and technique of kumiko is explored. the course introduces you to the concept of kumiko and some of the history behind it. kumiko has its origins in japan and is used extensively in homes and home furnishings. video segments guide you through the creation of a kumiko panel. the pattern or motif featured in the course is the asa-no-ha. kumiko woodworking classes
Making kumiko. i’ve been preparing a lot of kumiko strips lately (for classes and side projects) and i thought i’d share my method for making them, since the process is a crucial step in the making of any shoji screen or kumiko pattern.. Kumiko does look like a great decompression exercise -- patient, tranquil and settling. master mike makes it look so easy. i feel i relate to mike better than anyone else i have found in the vast world of internet training -- perhaps because we share a second passion of art direction and design..
