A. michael dresdner: "i'll be happy to tell you how to do a gloss finish on your bench, but that still leaves me wondering why. a workbench, as its name implies, is to work on, and frankly, the best surface to work on is raw wood. it is less slippery, takes all sorts of abuse, and best of all, can be easily cleaned and resurfaced when needed.. When working with a softwood workbench top, such as plywood, many woodworkers find it important to add a finish to the workbench so it is easier to clean as well as help the plywood last longer. since plywood is a softwood, it is much easier for liquid, oils, and other residue to get into the wood and cause damage.. Concerning the finish, i assumed the bench was going to be exposed to sun and rain all year round, in which case, no finish will hold up for more than a few years because there won’t be a way to keep water from getting underneath and causing the finish (or paint) to peel. you can’t caulk a bench like you do the framing around windows.. woodworking bench finish
It can be touched up when needed over time and is a perfect finish for a workbench top. the final surface is not as hard as a polyurethane or varnish, but is faster to complete and faster to touch.
